What is a Boston Qualifying time?

Boston Qualifying (BQ) times are marathon finish time standards required to enter the Boston Marathon. Current BQ for men 18-34 is 3:00:00; for women 18-34 it's 3:30:00. Older age groups have easier standards. Actual accepted times are typically 2-8 minutes faster than the standard due to field size limits.

Boston Qualifying times are marathon time standards you must meet to register for the Boston Marathon. They vary by age and sex. Current standards for men: 18-34 = 3:00:00, 35-39 = 3:05:00, 40-44 = 3:10:00, 45-49 = 3:20:00, 50-54 = 3:25:00, 55-59 = 3:35:00. For women, add 30 minutes to each male category (18-34 = 3:30:00, 35-39 = 3:35:00, etc.). You must run these times at a Boston-certified marathon within an 18-month qualifying window. However, there's a catch: meeting the qualifying time doesn't guarantee entry. Boston has a field size limit (~30,000), and more runners qualify than there are spots. So the Boston Athletic Association accepts the fastest qualifiers first, typically requiring runners to beat their BQ standard by 3-8 minutes. In recent years, the cutoff has been about 5:29 under the standard. So if you're 30 years old, you really need to run about 2:54:30 to be confident of a Boston spot. A BQ is one of the most prestigious amateur running accomplishments — it typically requires 2-4 years of structured training for naturally gifted runners, longer for others. It's a ~95th percentile marathon achievement in each age group.
