GEAR

What gear do I actually need to start running?

To start running you need exactly three things: properly fitted running shoes (6,000-12,000 INR), a couple of technical t-shirts and shorts (not cotton), and a watch or phone to track time. Skip everything else until you're running 3 times a week consistently for a month.

Running has the lowest gear barrier of any sport, and companies want you to forget that. Here's the honest minimum list. Essential: (1) Properly fitted running shoes from a specialty store after a gait analysis. 6,000-12,000 INR for a quality daily trainer from Brooks, ASICS, Saucony, Hoka, Nike, or New Balance. This is the single most important purchase. (2) 2-3 technical t-shirts in polyester, nylon, or merino wool. Cotton traps sweat and causes chafing — avoid it. 500-1,500 INR each. (3) 2-3 pairs of running shorts or tights. 800-2,000 INR each. Women need a decent sports bra (1,500-3,500 INR) — this is non-negotiable. (4) A way to track time: your phone's timer is free and sufficient. Optional after 1 month of consistency: basic GPS watch (Garmin Forerunner 55 at 15,000-18,000 INR), 1-2 pairs of technical running socks. Optional after 3 months: foam roller (2,000 INR), hydration belt or handheld for long runs (1,500-3,000 INR), a second pair of shoes to rotate, a sports watch with heart rate. Skip entirely as a beginner: carbon-plated shoes, premium watches, compression gear, electrolyte subscriptions, running pods, fancy apparel bundles. These are mostly marketing or advanced-runner gear. Total honest start-up cost: 10,000-20,000 INR. Anyone pushing more than that is selling you gear, not helping you run.
