Towel Scrunches
A foot intrinsic strengthening exercise performed by curling a towel toward you with your toes. Activates the flexor digitorum brevis, abductor hallucis, and other intrinsic foot muscles critical for arch support.
- 01Sit in a chair with your bare foot flat on a towel spread on a smooth floor.
- 02Keep your heel on the ground throughout the exercise.
- 03Use your toes to grip and scrunch the towel toward you, pulling it under your arch.
- 04Spread your toes wide, then curl them to grip the towel — this is one rep.
- 05Continue until the entire towel has been pulled toward you.
- 06Spread the towel back out and repeat for the prescribed sets.
Why it matters
The intrinsic foot muscles form the "core" of the foot, actively supporting the medial longitudinal arch during the stance phase of running. Research shows that runners with stronger foot intrinsics have a stiffer arch spring mechanism, better energy return, and significantly lower rates of plantar fasciitis. Towel scrunches are a simple way to rebuild this often-neglected musculature.
